Countdown To Halloween // Day Sixteen

Welcome back to day sixteen of my countdown to Halloween series, where I share all of my favourite Halloween films. Today's film is...

Let's talk about the film that terrified me for most of my childhood...

The film follows Grace Stewart (Nicole Kidman) and her two children Anne (
Alakina Mann) and Nicholas (James Bentley) shortly after World War II has ended. They've recently moved to the English coast and although their father who fought in the war has been presumed dead, they're awaiting his return. The children suffer from a rare photosensitivity disease, which means they have to be constantly protected from harm and as a result, the house has to be in a lot of darkness, a lot of the time. Anne starts to think that she can see ghosts but devoutly religious Grace doesn't believe any of it until weird events start to occur...

I first watched this when I was very young. Was that a good idea? No, it bloody well was not. It's only a 12 so I didn't think it was a big deal at the time but this film changed me as a child. I think young children struggle to understand what is going on in a lot of films, so they just kind of make up this alternative scenario in their head of what they think is happening. There's an older lady that appears later on in the film, who I believe is blind. And in reality, she's no threat of any kind and she's still alive but I thought she was this evil, ghost lady that lived in my loft, sat on a red velvet chair and at night she would try to come and get me. This became a regular thing I would have nightmares about and I'd always end up having to sleep in my parent's bed, I was that scared... So because of that, I definitely would not recommend for children.

Through the whole film, it gives off a very creepy atmosphere which probably has a lot to do with the huge mansion they live in, the fact that most rooms in the house are unused and locked at all times and due to the children's disease, they have to live in total darkness. Usually, with horror or thriller films you can sort of guess what the twist will be a mile off but I don't think many people see this one coming and I love that. I re-watched it not too long ago and although it's 16 years old now, it's still a really good paranormal horror film that doesn't just rely on jump scares.

If paranormal films are your thing but you don't like something too scary, give this a whirl!
