Welcome back to day thirty-one of my countdown to Halloween series, where I share all of my favourite Halloween films. Today's film is...

Over 300 years ago, the Sanderson witches: Winifred (Bette Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Mary (Kathy Najimy) were sentenced to death in Salem, Massachusetts. Fast forward to the present day, Max (Omri Katz), his friend Alison (Vinessa Shaw) and his little sister Dani (Thora Birch) think it would be cool idea to explore the old Sanderson house on Halloween night. Rumour has it, that if a virgin lights the 'black flame candle' the three witches will return so when Max lights it, it has some disastrous consequences...

Hocus Pocus (1993) is probably my all-time favourite Halloween film and it used to absolutely terrify me as a child. I can't even remember the first time I watched it, it's just a film that I've grown up watching every year on Halloween and have always been obsessed with. Did Halloween even exist before this film? I'm just not even sure. I was shocked to see that this film actually gets quite a lot of hate online. HOW? What did these people do on Halloween when they were growing up? Sad. Very sad.

I don't even know how to articulate how much I love this film. It has the right combination of Halloween spookiness and humour, the casting is brilliant - I just couldn't imagine anyone else playing the Sanderson sisters; they just give the film the energy and charm it really needed (and also a great musical number), the dialogue isn't as cheesy as most other Disney Channel films and it has good pacing, not being too fast or too slow and they explain everything well, ensuring that there is enough character development to get you invested. I also love the production design, it's attention to detail and how visually stunning it is; capturing how beautiful the autumn time is and the essence of Halloween.

It's technically primarily marketed as a children's film but even now, I still really, really love it and I can watch it again and again without tiring of it.
