Countdown To Halloween // Day Twenty-Five

Welcome back to day twenty-five of my countdown to Halloween series, where I share all of my favourite Halloween films. Today's film is...

The film follows Jack Skellington - Halloweentown's 'Pumpkin King' as he becomes very bored with the usual annual Halloween routine of scaring people...and then he stumbles upon Christmastown, which is magical and bright and colourful. He feels like he has found a whole new lease of life and he decides that he wants to take over Christmas and he'll do this by kidnapping Santa Claus and doing the job himself.

It's the same old question - is the Nightmare Before Christmas a Halloween or Christmas film? I even asked this very question over on my Twitter and the general consensus was that it's a Christmas film. However, it's gothic and macabre themes make it completely appropriate to watch at Halloween too so I will continue to watch it on both occasions.

Because it's called 'Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas' I was always under the assumption that it was completely a Tim Burton film and I always said that it's his best film but during a recent re-watch I realised that although it was produced and the concept and characters came from Burton, it was actually directed by Henry Selick, who also directed Coraline.

This has always been and will continue to be one of my favourite films. The stop-motion and attention to detail is just phenomenal and it's crazy to think that one minute of film alone took at least a week to make...but it just wouldn't have been the incredible film it is, if it was just another animation. I also really love the screenplay and how the cliches of both annual holidays were brought to life, without it becoming tiresome or completely cringe-inducing. The universe of the Nightmare Before Christmas is just so breathtakingly wonderful and feels just as magical now, as it did all those years ago when I'd watch it constantly as a child and it could definitely be argued that even after all this time, it's still one of the best stop-motion films to date.
It's also a musical composed by Danny Elfman. I usually find that animation films that double as a musical can be slightly hit or miss but this is incredible and I genuinely love the songs. I was going to list my favourites but there are just too many that are so wonderful and memorable.

People will probably try and tell you that this is a Christmas film but if you're looking for something light-hearted to watch this Halloween, it's definitely acceptable to pop this on!
